Caffeine fans will agree with us: morning coffee while camping is a pri-o-ri-té! Because we're just as passionate about this delicious, energizing nectar as you are AND because we're lucky enough to share our passion with Escape Coffee, we've jointly decided to offer you our invaluable tips for making coffee while camping. And above all, how to make it work!

1) Get the right equipment to suit your tastes

For camping, three pieces of equipment are the best way to get a good cup of coffee without making life too complicated.

The French press

According to Escape, it's the easiest way to make coffee while camping! The French press must be used with a filter-type grind to obtain the optimum brew for this equipment. Using the French press is fairly straightforward: for a 500 ml coffeemaker, 30 grams of coffee are required, which equates to a ratio of 1:16. For a stronger coffee, opt for a 1:15 ratio, and for a milder one, 1:17.

How do you make a coffee in a French press?

  • Add coffee in the ratio of your choice to the coffeemaker;
  • Boil water;
  • Add boiling water to the coffee maker;
  • Replace the lid without pressing in the filter and wait 9 minutes;
  • Squeeze the coffee halfway through the pot and serve. The filter will retain the particles, whereas pressing it to the bottom could result in the bitterness of over-infused coffee;
  • Press the coffee back to the bottom of the pot and serve the second coffees.

The Italian coffee maker

If you're more the espresso type, the Italian coffee maker will make your day. Easy to use and extremely durable (perfect for several years in your classic camping tub!), the Italian coffeemaker should be used with an espresso grind, i.e. very fine, even powdery. For espresso lovers, this coffeemaker delivers a fuller-bodied coffee.

How to make coffee with an Italian coffee maker?

  • Add boiling water to the bottom container, up to the screw. As the water is already boiling, the coffee will be exposed to the heat for less time and retain more aroma;
  • Add coffee to the coffee container to fill it completely;
  • Screw the upper and lower parts together;
  • Place on the round part of your camping stove. As soon as the coffee starts to drip from the top, reduce the heat to its lowest setting to allow the infusion to take place gently. Turn off the heat when the coffee has risen above halfway up the container, and leave for another 3-4 minutes to allow all the coffee to flow out the top;
  • Enjoy!

Manual filter coffee maker

The manual filter produces delicious coffee, but requires a little more preparation and management of the beverage. On the other hand, filter coffee fans will love the taste of their hot morning beverage. To use it, you'll need boiling water, a filter coffee grind and a little patience. The brewing process takes slightly longer than with other methods.

How to make coffee with a manual filter coffee maker?

Equipment required:

  • Hand grinder or ground coffee
  • A V60 or other type of infuser (Kalina, Chemex, Woops, Aeropress)
  • The right filters
  • Goose neck kettle
  • The right recipe

Preparation stages:

  • Place the coffeepot drop by drop on a cup;
  • Insert a filter into the cone;
  • Fill filter with ground coffee;
  • Pour a small amount of hot water over the coffee to moisten it;
  • Let the water drain into the cup;
  • Add the remaining hot water slowly, pouring evenly;
  • Allow coffee to brew and drain completely;
  • Enjoy!

The manual coffee grinder

This tool enables even the most seasoned coffee lovers to grind their coffee in the open air in the morning. The advantage is that if you use a coffee grinder at home, you can use your own beans without having to buy new ones. According to Escape, the Chestnut c3s Pro grinder from Eight ounce coffee is an excellent choice.

2) Get the right coffee grind

This is THE most important point for a successful coffee. The coffee grind, depending on the equipment chosen, is essential. Each coffee maker model has its own specific grind. The good news is that when you order Escape coffee online, you can choose the appropriate grind for your equipment.

  • French press: filter-type grind, the size of the ground grain is flakier and resembles fleur de sel.
  • Italian coffeemaker: espresso grind, powdery texture.
  • Manual filter coffeemaker: filter-type grind, the size of the ground bean is flakier and resembles fleur de sel.

4) Consider water quality

Water is also an extremely important aspect. Water that's too soft and lacking in minerals won't brew coffee properly. This is what we call watery coffee! On the other hand, water that is too hard makes the coffee taste very bitter. The best way to brew coffee is with filtered water, either through a filter such as a Brita, or with filtered water purchased at the grocery store.

5) Storing coffee before and during your camping trip

Summer rhymes with humidity! However, coffee should be stored in a dark place at a stable temperature between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius. A cooler can be a good place to store it during your stay. What's more, Escape coffees are roasted to order, so the coffee is very young when it arrives at your home. Each bag is marked with the roasting date. It is advisable to open the bag 14 days after roasting, so that the coffee has time to release as much CO2 as possible.

6) Frothing the milk

For latte lovers, frothed milk is a must. The French press can be used as a milk frother. In fact, you can heat up your milk, pour it into the French press and use the filter as a milk frother by making up and down movements with the press stem. If a second French press can't be transported, the battery-powered milk frother is compact and efficient.

In short, camping coffee is all about the grind, the water, the ratio and the quality of the coffee. As Escape Coffee is passionately committed to the roasting of its beans, the Quebec roaster is offering you 20% off online orders using promo code 2025CHEVRES20.

Enjoy your camping and, above all, your coffee!
