1. Who are Mountain Chèvres ?

Les Chèvres de montagne is more than just a group: it's the largest community of outdoor women in Canada! Our mission? To make outdoor activities more accessible to women, whatever their level of experience. Across Quebec, we organize tailor-made outings and events that allow women to explore, learn and progress in a caring environment, without pressure to perform. Each activity is supervised by experts in the field, and respect for the environment guides all our actions.

2. Who can benefit from the Chèvres' skill progression and development activities?

When it comes to skill progression and development, a certain level of mastery of basic techniques is required. But you don't have to be an expert! That's exactly what this type of activity was created for: to enable women of intermediate level and above to reach a higher level in their sport, thanks to the acquisition of additional confidence-building skills.

3. Can I come alone to a Mountain Chèvres activity?

Not everyone has an outdoor partner who wants to take up a new sport or hone their skills through coaching. By offering outdoor activities for women, we are responding to this social need and desire to learn. Lack of a partner can be a barrier for many, and group activities allow us to meet new people with similar interests and motivations. What many people don't realize is that the majority of registered participants are on their own. Friendships are made every day!

4. What can I expect from a skill progression and development activity?

As the basic techniques are known - and sometimes mastered - progression and improvement activities aim to teach more advanced techniques related to the sport in question. They are also designed to perfect existing skills by fine-tuning certain notions that help solidify acquired competencies. A progression activity is not for those who want to learn a sport or discipline. The group will already possess a certain level of skill, which could detract from the experience of someone who wants to be introduced to the sport.

5. What skill level is required for a progression and improvement activity?

Progression and skill development activities are aimed at intermediate to advanced level women, who have some knowledge of the basic techniques of the sport and are comfortable with them. But you don't have to be a pro! Each event has a Level Required section to help you situate yourself. For alpine skiing, snowboarding and touring activities, we've designed a skill level scale to help you assess your level.

For certain activities. It's also important to consider the level of fitness required to ensure a safe and positive experience. For example, a progressive touring activity requires ease on descents and climbs, which will undoubtedly be more arduous and numerous than in an introductory activity. You may want to ask yourself a few questions to determine your level:

  • How long have I been doing this sport?
  • On what type of terrain do I feel comfortable? (e.g. skiing, on black runs, in the undergrowth. Mountain biking, technical sections, blue and black trails. Touring, on complex, steep terrain, on two or more climbs during the day).
  • Do I need tips to fine-tune my technique (progression) or do I need to learn or relearn the technique after a period of stoppage (initiation)?

We invite you to write to us if you have any doubts on the subject. We'll be happy to guide you.

6. What equipment do I need to take part?

The equipment required for an activity depends on the sport in question. Each event in the program has an Inclusion and Exclusion section, as well as a To-Know section detailing the equipment required to take part in the activity if it is not provided.

We don't rent out equipment for skill development and progression activities, as each participant should be self-sufficient with his or her own equipment. Our team can certainly help you in the event of a technical problem with your equipment, but you should know it well and be able to manage it.
