Here are the concepts you will learn during the course:

• Introduction to the operation of a keelboat, both as a motorboat and as a sailboat.
• The terminology used to describe the boat and nautical activities will be taught and used throughout the course.
• Practical topics related to motorized navigation, including simple maneuvering skills, as well as departure from and return to port.
• Development of basic sailing skills, including sail selection, use and positioning of sails to provide propulsion, and operating the vessel with a crew.
• Discussion of required and recommended safety equipment, as well as how to handle emergency situations that may arise during day trips.
• Explanation of the basic rules for avoiding collisions with other boats, and application of this information during practical sessions.
• Clarification of the meaning of weather forecasts and discussion of the impact of weather on ship operation, crew behavior and nautical activities.
• Basic introduction to the Canadian navigation system and the use of charts, tide and current tables.
