Here are the concepts you'll learn during the course:

• An introduction to how a cruising keelboat operates, both as a motorboat and as a sailboat.
• The terminology used to describe the boat and water activities will be taught and used throughout the course.
• Practical topics related to powerboat navigation, including basic maneuvering skills as well as departing from and returning to port.
• Development of basic sailing skills, including sail selection, the use and positioning of sails to provide propulsion, and operating the vessel with a crew.
• Discussion of required and recommended safety equipment, as well as how to handle emergencies that may arise during day trips.
• Explanation of the basic rules for avoiding collisions with other vessels, with application of this information during practical sessions.
• Clarification of the meaning of weather forecasts and a discussion of the impact of the weather on the ship's operations, crew behavior, and nautical activities.
• A basic introduction to the Canadian navigation system, as well as to the use of charts and tide and current tables.
