THE SPIRIT OF THE JOURNEY
Aconcagua imposes its dominance at first sight. It's on the second day of the approach hike that we catch sight of it at the bottom of the valley. From then on, its gigantic stature will never cease to haunt us, growing at every turn of the trail until we reach Plaza de Mulas, our base camp at 4,450 metres. This camp will gradually become an oasis, a place of rest and almost rich air as we progress towards the higher camps. But from here, it's hard to imagine triumphing over the summit, as it seems so unattainable... At these high altitudes, it's all a question of rhythm, perseverance, tenacity and physical and moral endurance. Of course, the effort will be great. But we'll soon forget all about it, when our gaze and our smile finally carry over the whole of America and we're at the summit of Aconcagua!
THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCLIMATATION
Acclimatization is always the most important element of a high-altitude expedition, and this Argentinian summit is no exception. The height of Aconcagua demands a "Himalayan" approach. Camps are therefore set up in two stages. This technique of climbing during the day and then descending to sleep at a lower altitude maximizes the acclimatization process and allows you to travel "light".
ACCOMMODATION_ - _Rustic without service
We stay in a hotel in Mendoza for the first two and last two nights.
We have one night in a hostel in Penitentes.
During the trek, we camp in 3-person expedition tents for two people.
FOOD
LUGGAGE
Luggage is transported by mule for the first two days of the trek to Plaza de Mulas (60 kg per mule). The mules sleep at the same campsites as we do on these days, so we only have to carry the essentials for the day.
From base camp we carry our own luggage. Bags should weigh between 15 and 20 kilograms (35 and 45 pounds), as some of the food and cooking equipment is carried by porters we hire.
You have the option of hiring a porter to carry equipment up or down the mountain (additional cost).
