It is considered one of the most spectacular treks in South America. The Apolobamba Range trek in Bolivia offers a genuine connection with the mountains and culture of the Andes. Surrounded by perpetually snow-capped peaks, glaciers, llamas, and high-altitude lakes, you’ll hike for a total of 9 days, accompanied by local guides as well as our guide from Chèvres. The authenticity of this trek is central to the journey, and you’ll have the chance to experience it while taking the time to savor every moment in this majestic setting. Very rarely traveled, the itinerary involves 7 to 8 hours of hiking per day, with peaks reaching nearly 5,000 meters in elevation. A true immersion in high-mountain trekking.
Thanks to the Karavaniers team, the trip was designed to include an acclimatization period at the start, allowing all participants to be in good shape before the big departure for the trek. A few days of hiking around La Paz and Lake Titicaca ensure proper acclimatization. These hikes, which offer breathtaking views, allow the body to adjust to the altitude. This trek in Bolivia is a unique opportunity to experience the culture and explore a little-traveled route and spectacular landscapes—all in good company.

Breathtaking landscapes (high, snow-capped mountains, majestic glaciers, high-altitude lakes, mountain passes, valleys, plains) with passes over 5,000 meters almost every day! Probably one of the four most spectacular treks in South America.
A great, off-the-beaten-path trek—even forgotten or virtually unknown—in the Apolobamba Range: we’re the only foreigners to travel these trails. No tourists in sight, just small hamlets surrounded by herds of alpacas and llamas.
The acclimatization period at high altitude—essential for the participants’ safety—has been planned to ensure everyone is in good shape to start the trek… without forgetting the joy of discovering Andean culture: Lake Titicaca, the Yampupata Peninsula, the Island of the Sun and its lovely, easy hikes, and La Paz.
As always, we’ll eat well, sleep well, and hike well!
Outside of the trek: a comfortable (though not luxurious) hotel in La Paz, well-located and charming. An eco-friendly hostel on Isla del Sol. A very basic hotel for the night after the trek; hot water not guaranteed. Everywhere, rooms are shared by two people, except at the rustic hostel, where rooms can accommodate up to five people.
During the trek: 3-person tents shared by two travelers. The tents are set up by the local team, but if you arrive early, before the camp is set up, lend a hand!
The restaurants in La Paz serve good, hearty meals with plenty of variety. Elsewhere, the eateries are sometimes more modest, offering traditional dishes.
On the trek, the cook spoils us with a starter, main course, and dessert in the evening, a picnic lunch, and a morning snack to pack in our backpacks along with our lunch.
*This trip cannot accommodate gluten-free or vegan diets
You’ll carry only your daypack throughout the entire trek. Your luggage will be transported in the support team’s vehicle between camps (max 13 kg). You can leave a small bag containing clean clothes at the hotel in La Paz while you’re on the trek.

This itinerary outlines the main features of the trip, but nothing is set in stone. The unexpected, often the most beautiful moments, can transform the route: an unknown local festival, or a newly opened region to discover. Sometimes, nature gets in the way: snow-covered passes, torrential rain or landslides. In these cases, the itinerary fades into the background to make way for adventure, under the responsibility and discernment of the guide, who guarantees the safety and spirit of the trip.

Difficulty Level - Challenging
You must be in good physical condition, and prior trekking experience is recommended before signing up. This is a challenging trek. The elevation gain is significant (approximately 600 to 900 meters per day). The difficulty also stems from the sometimes substantial distance covered (up to 15 km), combined with high altitude (camps at an average of 4,500–4,700 m and passes above 5,000 m on 7 out of 9 days) and the lack of marked trails. We generally follow paths worn by vicuñas.
Expect to hike about 7 to 9 hours a day; cold weather and snow may be present when crossing the mountain passes. We’re in a remote area, a day’s drive from La Paz. However, there will be small villages, hamlets, or isolated houses along the route.
This is a good acclimatization trip; if you’d like more comfort, feel free to arrive in La Paz a day or two early.
This route is intended for women who are in good physical condition and hike in the mountains regularly. A strong mental attitude is a valuable complement to physical abilities.
