Day 1 - Arrival in Whitehorse
Meet the group and your guides.
Day 2 - Depart Whitehorse for Lake Laberge
Lake Laberge, 50km long and 5km wide, is notoriously dangerous when the wind blows. For this reason, we cross it by motorboat. Arriving at the northern end of the lake in the early afternoon, we unload our gear and set up our first camp on the banks of the Yukon River. For the rest of the afternoon, we'll be going over the various canoe-handling techniques, and even practising them on the lake. In the evening, we settle in around the fire and share our first wood-fired meal!
Days 3 to 13 - Canoeing down the Yukon River
The adventure begins today as we load our canoes with all the necessary gear and take our first paddle down the Yukon River. Over the course of 12 days, we'll paddle more than 600 kilometers down the river to Dawson City.
For the first few days, we travel along the wildest part of the Yukon River, where we have the greatest chance of observing the wildlife of the boreal forest. We'll also see abandoned logging villages and camps, beached paddlewheelers, etc.
Shortly after passing the village of Carmacks, we encounter the only rapids on the route: Five Fingers Rapids. During the gold rush, these rapids dislodged many a gold-seeker's raft, but in the early 20th century they were widened with explosives to allow steamboats to pass. Today, these rapids present little more than a challenge to our canoe descent.
Further along, you'll discover one of the Yukon River's best-known historic sites: Fort Selkirk, a former First Nation fishing site that became a Hudson's Bay Company trading post in 1852. At the confluence with the White River, the Yukon River becomes silt-laden, its color changes and its flow accelerates. Some 10 kilometers downstream, the Stewart River joins the Yukon. From here, we paddle the final stretch, due north, towards Dawson City!
Day 14 - Arrival in Dawson City
Our canoeing adventure comes to an end as we set foot in Dawson City in the late morning. You then have the rest of the day to discover this city, founded in 1898 and full of history.
During our evening in town, we discover the Diamond Tooth Gerties, Canada's oldest casino, with its can-can dancers, poker and blackjack tables!
Day 15 - Return to Whitehorse
We drive back to Whitehorse. Arrival is scheduled for the end of the day.
Day 16 - Return to Quebec
As your stay draws to a close, you'll be taken to the airport for your return flight to Quebec.
This trip is accessible to all those who want to experience a group adventure!
No special canoeing experience necessary.
